This month, I had the opportunity to serve on the state task force for school safety. It’s an honor to make sure that a rural school perspective is heard. In Willow Springs and other small towns across Missouri, the school is the heartbeat of our community. So much of a town’s identity is shaped by its schools, and our district takes that responsibility seriously. We’re not just here to educate your kids; we’re here to protect them. When you drop your kids off each morning, you’re putting your trust in all of us. You’re trusting that the doors are secure, that the staff is prepared, and that your children are surrounded by people who sincerely care.
School safety looks different at each of the over 500 public schools across Missouri. In small town Willow we have a special kind of closeness. Teachers know their students by name - and often know their families, too. Bus drivers notice when something’s off. Coaches become mentors. That familiarity gives us an incredible advantage when it comes to safety. We can spot needs early, build relationships that matter, and create a sense of belonging that protects kids in ways no metal detector ever could. Relationships are the greatest defense against school violence.
That closeness also means school safety requires all of us. It means paying attention to the quiet student who’s withdrawn. It means supporting our teachers and administrators when they push for new safety measures and procedures. It means encouraging kindness, speaking up when something doesn’t seem right, and reminding our kids that they are never alone.
True school safety isn’t about the latest legislation, the newest app, or even additional funding. It’s about creating a culture of care. It’s about letting students know that Willow Schools is a community where every student knows they are seen, valued, and protected.
When we work together, as a community, we send a clear message: our kids matter and their safety will always be our top priority.
