October cannot end without the traditional Halloween events of Trick-or-Treating and seeing children and families roaming the neighborhoods looking to scare up some sweet treats. West Plains Downtown held Scare on the Square from 5:30-7:30 on Halloween, Oct. 31. Hundreds of children, teens, and adults haunted the square in West Plains, receiving candy from gathered businesses and organizations.
Entertainment for the event came with a live performance from The STARS Foundation in front of West Plains Music. Many of the stores located on the square stayed open to participate in the event and hand out sweets to attendees. These include Wiles Title Services, Perry's Barbershop, Powell-Crews Title & Escrow Co., Country at Heart, Life Phases, 10/40 Coffee, Howell County Democrats and others. Other businesses and organizations that participated in the event include, but were not limited to, RNR Tire Express, Game Stash, and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 2782.
Not far from the square on West Main Street, Bruce Hershenson and his family have become famous locally during Halloween for giving out full-size candy bars. Hershenson said on social media that his family gave away 2,349 candy bars, a slight decrease from the 2,561 that were given out in 2023.
