Art Around Town winners announced

Winners for the 20th annual Art Around Town exhibit have been chosen, organizers announced last week.
The annual event, which ended Tuesday, featured two-dimensional artwork created by area elementary and middle school students from 11 area school districts.
The exhibit was sponsored by Missouri State University-West Plains' (MSU-WP) University/Community Programs (U/CP) Department and held in the exhibit hall at the West Plains Civic Center.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the process for judging the entries this year was altered slightly, organizers said. Instead of awarding the top three entries by grade, artists from the area who juried the exhibit chose the top three entries from each school district, organizers explained.
A Best of Show winner also was selected. That honor went to Keyonna Patterson, a fifth-grade student at Fair View School, for her watercolor and pen piece.
Other winners by school include:
Alton – Kendrick Sechrest, fifth grade, first place; Annie Roberts, third grade, second place; and Colton Hitch, fifth grade, third place.

Because of the pandemic, an awards ceremony was not held. Instead, the awards will be sent to the schools and presented to the students by their teachers, organizers said.
"Congratulations to the schools and students who are being recognized for their amazing talent," U/CP Director Brenda Polyard said.
A total of 180 pieces of artwork were submitted by school officials for this year's exhibit.
