Willow Comes Out Swinging

The Willow Springs Bears faced off against a brand-new opponent on Saturday. Despite the heat and the drive to California, Mo., the varsity pulled off a 48 to 6 win against St. Mary’s.
“It was hot out there. Every kid was dying from the heat, which speaks to their toughness,” said first year Head Coach Travis Payne.
In their season opener, Willow couldn't get much traction at first.
“We stalled out our first drive but from then on, we moved the ball and were very successful. We did a great job running it,” Coach Payne said.
''They were tough and well prepared, a good football team, and came out and played well,'' Payne said of St. Mary’s.
Gavin Ferguson had a big game Saturday afternoon, scoring three touchdowns for his team. Ryan Koehler, another seasoned player, also scored touchdown.
Despite many strong plays of the game, two plays stand out. With 15 seconds left in half and having a first down, Gavin Ferguson broke through the St. Mary’s defenders and took the ball across the field for a 35-yard touchdown with only 2 seconds left in the half, sealing the deal for a 28-0 lead.
Another touchdown, literally coming out of left field, was thanks to the left guard, Warren Ennis, who ran the ball for a 20-0 lead.
“It was awesome seeing an offensive lineman make a touchdown,'' said Coach Payne.
Coach Payne is determined to continue this winning streak and ensure that his team fills the gaps in training and skills.
“We have to worry about ourselves and get better every day, we had some excellent things, and we have some things to fix like our pass protection.”
The 1-0 Bears will take on the Marionville Comets in a home game on Friday. The Comets will come to Palenske Field fresh from a 46 to 22 win over Stockton.
