Rain, Young Bench Continue to Trouble Bears Baseball

Skipping a baseball season last Spring has surely presented its challenges to every team in the conference, but the Willow Springs Bears are struggling to find a win this season. Last year’s team would have featured 13 seniors who never got their final season on the diamond, but surely would have provided an opportunity for the up-and-coming players to chalk up some varsity play. Instead, the season never began.
The upshot of skipping that season is the varsity Bears team this year has only two players with varsity experience, one of whom is senior Kyle Wood, who was Second Team All-Conference during the Bears’ last season. The 2021 starting lineup features five sophomores, three juniors, and one senior.
The rainy weather last week did not do the Bears any favors either. Both the home game against Salem and the Saturday play of the Hartville tournament were cancelled this week for wet fields.
Of the games the Bears did get to play, at Thayer and the first day of the Hartville Tournament, they logged two losses.
