Chapter 5
It was just after two in the morning. Carol sat with her feet on the desk, slouched in her chair staring at an old episode of Dr. Phil, the volume of the TV down low in case a call came in. The door to the dispatch room opened, and the officer on duty strode in. She bit the inside of her cheek to hold back the smile.
Officer Brian Scott was the smallest officer she'd ever seen. The Chief had to order Brian's uniforms specially made. It was a fact the officer was a bit touchy about.
"Anything?" he asked as he pulled himself up onto the nearby counter to sit.
"Not so far."
"It's a full moon. Longfeather will call."
The phone rang. Carol glared at the now grinning officer.
“Spring Willows emergency, do you need police, fire or medical?”
“They’re back,” the male voice whispered over the phone.
Carol swung her chair around and pointed an angry finger at the officer. “Mr. Longfeather, are you safe?”
Officer Scott jumped from the counter and turned to leave the office. Carol held up her hand to stop him.
She gathered the details of the call before hanging up. Turning to Brian, she informed him, “The aliens are in his garage. He has cinnamon rolls. Cinnamon rolls. I expect there to be at least one for me. You jinxed this night. You owe me.”
With a jaunty salute, the officer swaggered from the room.
