Safety for all

I have a home on South Center St. In some ways, it is like being a spectator at a race track.  If it were a race venue it would be one thing, but it is a residential area where there is a lot of pedestrian walkers/joggers, old and young alike.  Now imagine what these pedestrians have to deal with on their way from point A to B.  Their journey puts them on roads which are generally narrow, characterized by blind curves, have small-to-large potholes, and no sidewalks. When these walkers encounter cars, trucks, construction vehicles, or city vehicles the protocol is for the vehicles to slow down, and the pedestrians move out of harm's way.  This depicts good will for safety enhancement.  And most drivers possess such good will.

 

But, there are drivers who show off their vehicle's power, which on such roads render pedestrians at great risk.

 

I have a brother who survived being run over at the age of two. I pray no family has to face such trauma due to an inattentive or generally careless driver.

 

Some safety enhancements come to mind.  First: Posting of signs saying SLOW DOWN, FOR PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC, and BLIND CURVE AHEAD.  Second: Install speed limit signs (if none present).  Third:  Doubling of fines for violators.
