COMMUNITY VOICES: Bingo, projects, and aphorisms at the library

It looks like we’ve turned the corner and spring is upon us! It’s time to start thinking about gardens and flower beds, rain, hatching chicks and plans for Easter. Here at the library we are busy putting plans together for our Collaborative Summer Reading Programs. We are planning to have gardening, canning and cooking classes as well as days with crafts, games, STEAM projects, Scholastic and Paper Pie book fairs. Our 2026 Reading Challenge and our Pour Myself a Cup of Ambition Winter Bingo games are in full swing!  We are thankful for our local businesses who have donated coupons for the Puzzle Race and bingo games; Godfather’s Pizza, Sunshine Market, Bistro Fried Rice, Regen Farmhouse, Zeke’s Coffee House, Petals & Praise Floral, Terri Ann’s Boutique, Espresso Yourself Coffee, and Sonic. We are blessed to have a wonderful Friends of the Library group who host a .25 cent book sale on the first Saturday of each month. Their service helps us produce fun activities and helpful programs for our community. If you’re a patron of our book sale, we truly appreciate your support!

 

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.” The phrase appeared in Dr. Thomas Fuller’s (1654-1734)  Gnomologia: Adagies and Proverbs; Wise Sentences and Witty Sayings, Ancient and Modern, Foreign and British written in 1732. This antique book contains over 6000 wise sayings covering topics from friendship to weather, many of which we still use today. If this voluminous edition seems daunting to you, may I suggest Marian Dane Bauer’s In Like a Lion, Out like a Lamb; This charming children's book is a good read aloud and a perfect opportunity to talk about rhyming and poetry, just in time for national poetry month in April.   

 

Let me leave you with a few of my favorite gnomic aphorisms: "A lie has no leg, but a scandal has wings"; "It is madness for sheep to talk peace with a wolf "; “Charity begins at home, but should not end there"; "A book that is shut is but a block".
