Graduation season is always a busy time of joy and reflection. In thinking about this piece, I reflected on the numerous classes of Liberty graduates that I’ve had the privilege of following throughout the years, including my own two daughters. Working for the newspaper gave me a unique opportunity to capture some of the best moments these students had growing up.
Most of the students I know are grown up now with families of their own, finishing up their college aspirations, working on their careers or just beginning their journey into life outside the halls of Liberty High School. All of these students have one thing in common - they were and always will be a Liberty Eagle.
It’s something special to come from a small town. You have the rare opportunity to form bonds with your classmates that most will never know. Through heartache, joy, pain, and triumph you’ve grown with your classmates in the safety of the nest that is your hometown.
Those shared bonds extend out from the school and into the community – a community that fills up the stands at sporting events. Look at the SCA or District Champ shirts everyone wears whether they have a child in sports or not. Think of the businesses that proudly support athletic and academic events. Watch as the community comes together for a benefit to help someone in need.
In this day and age - that’s something special. The hometown that watched you grow up, preparing to spread your wings, is now and always will be behind you. Whether you stay close or find yourself far away, remember all the big lessons that this small town taught you. The values of hard work, resilience, pride, and community; knowing how to stay humble and show up for others.
Carry those values into life, those qualities will take you far. Carry those values knowing that you also carry the pride of everyone who watched you grow up.
So remember graduates: this small hometown gave you roots, but what you do next gives you wings.
