Robert Frederick Stroud Jr., 73, passed away at home on June 25, 2025, in Mountain View, Missouri. He was born on February 16, 1952, in Sikeston, Missouri, and lived a life marked by service, ingenuity, and a deep connection to the natural world.
A graduate of Subiaco Academy, Benedictine College Preparatory in Subiaco, Arkansas, where he will be interred, Robert completed his education in 1971. Just a few years later, in 1976, he began what would become a distinguished career with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as a firefighter. His dedication and skill led him to Alaska, where he rose through the ranks to become a crew chief on wildland fires. This was an essential role in protecting both people and ecosystems from the devastating effects of wildfire.
Robert’s career evolved further when he transitioned into equipment specialization. He relocated to Boise, Idaho, where his creativity and technical acumen designing and prototyping wildfire equipment for the General Services Administration (GSA) contributed meaningfully to the safety and effectiveness of firefighting efforts across the country and internationally, having consulted with the Australian and Mexican wildfire management teams.
Known among those who knew him as an outdoorsman and creative tinkerer, Robert found joy and purpose in nature and hands-on innovation. Whether navigating rugged terrain or refining tools for frontline responders, he brought thoughtfulness and precision to all he did.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Fred Stroud; his mother, Mary Helen Stroud; his wife, Barbara (McCollough) Stroud; and his sister, Rebecca Garner. He is survived by his brother, Joseph Peace and wife, Fran; his sister, Patricia Maynard and her husband, John; and his sister Rebecca’s husband, James Garner.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to those who follow in his path of service and ingenuity.
