Patients share gratitude for Dr. Kristina Grant’s compassionate care

When Rhonda Nunley and her husband, Walter, moved from Spencer, Indiana, to Raymondville, Missouri, in May, finding a healthcare provider they could trust was one of their greatest concerns.

Both live with significant medical challenges and disabilities, and they knew they needed a physician who could do more than manage their medical conditions. They wanted someone who would listen, understand their circumstances and genuinely care about them as people.

They found that person in Kristina Grant, DO, family medicine and obstetrics physician at the TCMH Medical Office Complex in Houston.

“We were incredibly fortunate to find Dr. Grant,” the couple shared. “From the moment she accepted us as patients, Dr. Grant took an immediate and personal interest in our health and well-being.”

Rhonda is a cancer survivor who continues to manage ongoing health challenges, while Walter lives with disabilities related to C4-C6 spinal problems, acute diabetes and hypertension. Together, they face chronic pain and the daily challenges that accompany significant medical conditions.

After years of interacting with physicians and healthcare providers, they say Dr. Grant has provided a level of care they have rarely experienced.

“We have never experienced the level of personal concern, urgency, compassion and dedication that Dr. Grant has demonstrated toward us,” they said.

For the couple, what sets Dr. Grant apart is not simply her medical knowledge, but the way she follows through.

“What makes Dr. Grant extraordinary is that she does not simply tell us what needs to be done, but she makes sure it gets done,” they said.

When testing is needed, Dr. Grant works to ensure it is completed promptly. When a specialist is needed, she works to get the appropriate referral in place. And when medications or other aspects of their care encounter obstacles, including insurance issues, they say she is willing to advocate on their behalf.

“If insurance becomes an obstacle, she does not simply tell us to figure it out ourselves,” they said. “She is willing to personally intervene and communicate directly with insurance providers when necessary to advocate for our care.”
That advocacy has made a significant difference in their experience of navigating healthcare.

“Living with disabilities and chronic medical conditions can sometimes make a person feel as though they are fighting a battle simply to obtain the care they need,” they said. “Dr. Grant has changed that experience for us.”

They describe her approach in four simple words: “She listens. She follows through. She remembers. She advocates. Most importantly, she cares.”

Although they have only been under Dr. Grant’s care since moving to Missouri, the couple says the impact she has made on their lives has been profound.

“It is difficult to put into words what it means to finally have a medical professional who makes you feel heard, respected, protected and genuinely cared for,” they said.

Their appreciation for Dr. Grant is so strong that they say distance would not change their desire to remain under her care.

“Even if circumstances required us to travel a considerable distance to continue seeing her, we would make that commitment,” they said. “That is how much confidence we have in her and how highly we value the care she provides.”
Through their experience, they say Dr. Grant has demonstrated that exceptional healthcare extends beyond diagnoses, medications and medical treatment.

“Dr. Grant has reminded us that exceptional healthcare is not only about medical knowledge,” they said. “It is also about compassion, communication, advocacy, urgency, humanity and the willingness to go the extra mile for someone who needs help.”

For Rhonda and Walter, that commitment has earned something even more meaningful than gratitude; it has earned their trust.

“She has become the kind of healthcare provider every patient hopes to find and very few are fortunate enough to have,” they said.

“We recognize her with the deepest appreciation and respect, not simply because she is our doctor, but because of the extraordinary difference she has made in our lives.”
