What Proposition 1 Actually Does

Proposition 1 asks voters to repeal the existing one-half cent capital improvement tax and replace it with a 1/2 cent sales tax. The original capital improvement tax restricted spending to road materials, culverts and contracted improvements for the county's Road and Bridge Department.

 

The new proposal would replace the 2017 tax without increasing the tax rate, but it would broaden the allowable uses to include labor and equipment purchases for Road and Bridge - something the current capital improvement tax does not permit Rising costs for equipment and labor have made this flexibility a priority.

 

As discussion continued around Proposition 1, some public confusion has emerged about what the measure would actually allow. It is important for voters to understand that nothing in the current ballot language authorizes any funds to be used for a new justice center, jail, or courthouse facilities.
