Repairs underway for wind-damaged school roof

Strong winds on March 19 damaged the roof of the FEMA shelter at Willow Springs Schools, known locally as the Bears Den. Superintendent Dr. Marty Spence confirmed Friday that repairs have already begun. 

 

“The event took place while middle school students were outside for recess. School staff were able to quickly get kids inside and out of harm's way. Our maintenance crew did a phenomenal job of quickly making sure that damage was limited, and we were able to move quickly into a recovery and repair phase,” Spence said. 

 

No one was injured, and there was minor damage to the surrounding area. Flying debris damaged the top layer of the middle school roof, Spence said, and a gas meter on the side of the Bears Den was also damaged. The meter was repaired Wednesday afternoon. 

 

There could be some interruption to students’ use of the Bears Den as repairs proceed. Lunch and other activities for high school students have been moved temporarily.
