MSU-WP Chancellor announces retirement

Missouri State University—West Plains Chancellor Dr. Dennis Lancaster announced last week that he will retire on July 1. Dr. Lancaster has spent more than three decades in various roles serving the university.

"Serving as chancellor of Missouri State University-West Plains has been one of the greatest honors of my career," Lancaster said in a press release on March 11. "I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together—expanding opportunities for students, strengthening community partnerships, and enhancing the campus experience. My nearly 33 years has seen so much growth and development of our campus and our community. I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity or job family." 

 

The chancellor began his career with the university in 1990, teaching English and journalism before becoming the assistant director of university communications two years later. He continued to lecture and served in various roles, including special projects coordinator, assistant professor, and assistant to the chancellor. Dr. Lancaster was named interim chancellor in 2020 and officially appointed to the position in 2022.

 

"While I look forward to the next chapter in my life, my heart will always be with Missouri State-West Plains," Dr. Lancaster added. "This university plays a vital role in the region, and I am confident it will continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead."

 

As Chancellor, Dr. Lancaster oversaw the introduction of many new programs and additions to the university. These included notable improvements such as the Terry L. “Bo” Pace Welding Program and the Pace Industrial Science Center, the TJ Swift House ASCEND program and the Neurodiversity and Autism Center, and expanding Grizzly athletics with softball, baseball, rodeo, and esports teams.

 

Missouri State University—West Plains will announce the details of its search for a new chancellor in the coming months.
