The Family Karate Elite Team of West Plains traveled to and competed in the PKC (Professional Karate Commission) sanctioned Great Lakes National Martial Arts Championships in Chicago, Ill., and the Kobayashi National Karate Championships in Kokomo, Ind., last week. Hundreds traveled from multiple states, as far away as Georgia to compete. The Elite Team members participate in Kata, Kumite, Weapons, Chanbara, and Team categories. Both tournaments proved fruitful to the team, which placed a total of 58 times in these categories collectively. Of these, there were 11 first-place, 16 second-place, and 13 third-place wins. The Elite Team consists of 22 members, ages 8 to adult. Team Sensei Randy Culpepper competes alongside his team in the adult division and was the Grand Champion in his age group in Kokomo.
