The Thomas F. Benyo Golf Course played host to this year’s Steve Waggoner Invitational Cross Country meet on the afternoon of September 10. More than twenty schools bussed their students to Willow Springs for the yearly meet. Unlike most years, spectators were not allowed at the event due to concerns over coronavirus contagion.
However, 443 athletes converged to compete in the grueling race. Middle school girls ran first, then the boys. Then, varsity girls ran, and varsity boys ran. Division 1 JV boys and girls ran together in the final event of the day.
Athletes from Willow Springs were strong competitors. Eighth-grader Hailey Jade finished fourth overall for the middle school girls with a time of 11:20.45. Among the middle school boys, eighth-grader Carson Smith finished second with a time of 9:23.43.
The only Lady Bear in the varsity race, junior Bethany Waggoner, finished in eighth place with a time of 22:46.86.
Every runner from Willow Springs finished the race.
