It starts here

In last week’s paper, I wrote an article, ‘Architectural bids received for new justice center,’ located on page three in the June 10 edition. That article is my first published writing piece. As a rising sophomore attending the Journalism School at the University of Missouri, having my name in print before I turned 20 was a milestone.

 

When I was about ten years old, I decided I wanted to write a book. It was going to be about a book discovered by three school girls, sending them on a magical quest. I completed about five chapters until I abandoned it, moving onto my next interest at the time. It wasn’t until I was a freshman in high school that I decided to turn writing into a career after I started keeping journals. I originally applied to creative writing programs, with the exception of journalism at Mizzou. There are many ways to become a writer, but I knew I had a direct path once I was accepted to the J-school, applying as an out-of-state student at the time.

 

By moving to Mountain View from upstate New York, everyone has asked me about the culture shock of a small town. Although I have definitely noticed some differences, I can say with confidence that everyone should have a chance to experience the amazing atmosphere of a small town community.

 

My goal after I finish college is to become a travel writer. I have always loved traveling to new places, meeting new people, and learning as much as I can from those experiences. Every place and everyone has their own story, including here in Howell County, which is the place I am launching my professional career.

 

I consider myself extremely lucky for all the opportunities I have received, and, even though I have only been working at the Howell County News for three weeks, I have learned so much already. I have not only learned how much work goes into creating a newspaper every week, I have learned about balancing personal and professional relationships, ethics, and the value of a positive work environment. I could not ask for better mentors than Amanda and Ron Mendez. Everyone else that I have interacted with so far is very welcoming, and I look forward to writing more this summer!
