S.W.A.T. unit activated on Thanksgiving Day

The Howell County S.W.A.T. unit responded to a residence on County Road 8270 on Thanksgiving Day. Two 911 calls on the holiday at approximately 11:40 a.m. reported a man in the roadway pouring gasoline on himself.
Deputies responded and made contact with the man, whose identity has not been released as of press time. The subject threw objects at the Deputies, armed himself with a knife, and stated he had a gun, says a release from the Howell County Sheriff's Office. The subject told Deputies he had killed other people inside the house. He threatened to douse the residence with gasoline and burn it.
In response to the subject's behavior and threats, the Howell County S.W.A.T. unit was activated. S.W.A.T. made contact with the subject in the front yard, and shortly thereafter, law enforcement contacted the West Plains Police Department's Crisis Negotiation Team.  Personnel from the Howell Rural Fire Department and South Howell County Ambulance were requested to respond and stage nearby.
After approximately thirty minutes the subject was taken into custody without injury, says the sheriff's office. The subject was transported to Ozarks Healthcare by ambulance for treatment of his self-inflicted injuries and for a 96-hour evaluation.
Officers cleared the residence to make sure there were no injured parties inside. There was no one located in the residence.
Charges for armed criminal action, making a terroristic threat, and second-degree assault of a special victim have been forwarded to the Howell County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. No formal charges had been filed by press time.
