A glimpse into the past A glimpse into West Plains Bank and Trust Company history was revealed as the former Powell-Crews Title and Escrow building was recently removed, following its destruction by fire last February. West Plains Bank and Trust Company, was located at 10 Court Square for many years prior to the construction of the current Main Bank location, 11 Court Square, in the 1970s. When demolition of the Powell-Crews building began, the outline of a sign could be made out in the soot on the brick of the neighboring building. The sign read "West Plains Bank" with "$100,000" just beneath the bank name. According to West Plains Bank and Trust Company Chairman of the Board S. David Gohn, the sign had to have been painted after 1928, which was the year of the West Plains Dance Hall explosion. "As for the dollar amount below the name, bank records indicate the asset size of the bank was $100,000 in 1933. Of that amount, $60,000 was capital and $40,000 was surplus."
