Two Arrested After Multiple Thefts in Mtn View

Two Mountain View teens have been charged with theft following their arrests in connection with a string of theft and vehicle break-ins from September 9 through 12 in Mountain View.
According to a probable cause statement filed by Officer Gregory Abney of the Mountain View Police Department, the department began to receive “several” reports of cash, change, and the contents of glove compartments stolen from vehicles as well as the theft of three bicycles in different locations around the city.
At approximately 11:00 p.m. on September 10, Officer Abney was dispatched to an address on West Third St. for a report of an additional vehicle break-in, during which a handgun was stolen from the glove compartment.
While on patrol on September 10, Officer Abney observed two bicycles that matched the description of two of the stolen bikes in a drainage ditch in an alley south of West First St. After placing the bicycles into evidence at the police department, Officer Abney spoke to a cashier at Signal gas station to inquire if she had overheard anyone talking about stolen bikes.
The cashier had seen two teenage males riding bikes that looked like the recovered stolen ones the day before. Officer Abney was able to review security footage from Signal, and store employees were able to identify the boys riding the bikes on the tape. The teens were identified as Jaden Reese and Jacob Day, reads Officer Abney’s statement.
Reese was taken into custody on September 13 by Officer Charles Brown. He was interviewed by Officer Abney while Officer Brown went to detain Day. Both young men were questioned on the subject of the thefts of cash, the handgun, other items from cars, and the bicycles.
In the interviews, Day was uncooperative and denied any involvement in the thefts. Reese revealed the whereabouts of the stolen pistol and eventually provided a written statement admitting that he and Day stole the items because they were, “bored, had nothing to do…”
“Jake [Day] got the idea that we should car hop maybe make a few bucks here and there [sic].”
Reese admitted not only to breaking into the cars with Day, but also to taking the bikes. Reese alleged that it was Day who took the gun.
Reese was issued citations for misdemeanor stealing and was released. He returned all the stolen items in his possession to Officer Brown. Using information provided by Reese, Officer Brown also recovered the stolen pistol.
Day, however, was placed under arrest and transported to Shannon County Jail pending the filing of formal charges. A class D felony charge of stealing a firearm was filed by the prosecuting attorney on September 14, and Day was transferred to Howell County Jail.
On September 18, Day appeared before the Honorable R. David Ray and entered a plea of not guilty. Day remains in custody as of press time on a bond of $5,000 pending a bond hearing scheduled on September 24.
