"Main Street America" was the theme of the Willow Springs Chamber of Commerce banquet, held Jan. 22 at First General Baptist Church. Guest speakers included Dr. Devin Stephenson with Three Rivers Community College and Jack Whitaker with Willow Care Inc. The Southern Ozarks Chamber Orchestra provided musical entertainment, sponsored by Landmark Bank and Landmark Investments.
With the congressional maps, the state high court ordered a lower court to hold further hearings on a challenge that the maps violate a requirement for compactness. In a unanimous decision, the court gave the lower court until Feb. 3 to make a decision, which gives the legislature time to come up with a new congressional district layout, if necessary.
The Eagles came out strong, taking a 23 to 11 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats cut the lead by seven in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 19 to 12 to bring the halftime score to Liberty 35, Licking 30. The Eagles added two points to their lead in the third quarter, but the Wildcats outscored the Eagles 17 to 15 in the fourth to leave the Eagles’ lead at 5 points.
The Keystone XL pipeline would supply crude oil from the Alberta tar sands to American refineries in Port Arthur, Texas. Construction of the pipeline would be a $7 billion boon to the Midwest economy, creating 18,000 jobs or more. And the steady supply of oil would mean millions of barrels less in imports from OPEC countries in the Mid-East, where political tensions send shock waves through the energy markets every single year.
