Calving clinic set for Aug. 22 in West Plains

Cattle producers interested in learning how to assist during difficult births have a hands-on opportunity in southern Missouri. University of Missouri Extension livestock and dairy specialists will teach a calving clinic Aug. 22 at the MU Extension Center in Howell County, 1376 Bill Virdon Blvd., West Plains.

 

Both classroom and hands-on practice of calf pulling and esophageal tube feeding will create a friendly learning environment for all participants from any skill level, said MU Extension livestock specialist Elizabeth Picking. The class will cover topics such as normal and abnormal birth presentations, when to assist a cow, how to properly use obstetric chains, how to safely tube-feed a calf and how to identify what type of colostrum product to use.
